Dentures

Tooth loss affects every part of your life. The more teeth you lose, the worse the effects. When you are missing an entire arch of teeth, your ability to eat is significantly affected. Not only is biting and chewing more difficult, but you also may not be able to enjoy many of your favorite foods anymore. Your speech suffers, making it harder for others to understand you. Your smile and your facial features are affected, which can then cause your confidence to drop. At Sussex Dental, we offer dentures as a solution for a full arch of missing teeth.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable prostheses designed to replace a complete arch of missing teeth. Dentures have been a common treatment for tooth loss for hundreds of years. However, modern dentures are vastly superior to those first dentures. They now look significantly more natural and feel less bulky. Dentures have an acrylic base that holds the acrylic resin teeth. The base rests directly on the gums, with the tissue providing the necessary support for the prostheses.

The Dentures Fitting Process

Getting your dentures generally takes two appointments. At your first appointment, all remaining teeth requiring extraction are removed. Next, impressions will be taken and sent to the lab for fabrication of your dentures. After the dentures are completed and sent back your dentist, they will be checked for proper fit and bite. Any necessary adjustments will be made so that your new prostheses look great and fit comfortably.

Taking Care of Your Dentures

When you have dentures, your oral hygiene routine does change a bit. Your dentures need to be removed every night for cleaning and then left out while you sleep. Leaving your dentures out is important for letting your gum tissue rest. First, before you take your denture out, lay a towel on the counter or fill the sink with water. This provides cushioning in case your dentures fall. Brush your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste. Do not use toothpaste, as it contains abrasives that leave scratches. After brushing, let your dentures soak in a denture cleaning solution. Next, take care of your mouth. Brush your gums gently with a soft bristled brush. If you have any healthy teeth in your other arch, brush those as well. In the morning, clean your mouth again and rinse your dentures off before setting them back in place.

Denture Benefits

There are many benefits to dentures, including:
•  Your ability to eat properly is restored.
•  You can speak normally again.
•  Your smile is restored.
•  You get your confidence back.

If you are missing a full arch of teeth, dentures can help. For more information, and to find out if dentures are right for you, call Sussex Dental today at (262) 246-6806.
