General Dentistry

Taking care of your mouth is important. Regular brushing and flossing are essential for maintaining a healthy smile and preventing serious complications like cavities, gum disease, and more. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily and flossing once daily at home. While these habits are important, there is more to maintaining a healthy mouth than brushing and flossing. Sussex Dental is here to help with general dentistry.

What is General Dentistry?

General dentistry, unlike dental specialties, provides a wide array of services essential for your oral health. As general dentists, we are the main providers of dental care for patients of all ages. We attend four years of dental school, during which we receive extensive education and significant training before taking a rigorous exam to become a licensed practitioner. We are trained to provide care for a wide variety of different concerns.

What Does a General Dentist Do?

As general dentists, we can perform a wide variety of different dental services to meet your oral health care needs. These services include:
•  Preventative care. One of the biggest services we provide is preventative care. This includes routine teeth cleanings and exams, both of which are crucial for preventing serious oral health conditions. We can also provide additional protection with sealants and fluoride treatments.
•  Restorative care. When oral health issues arise, we can provide you with many of the treatments you need to restore the health of your mouth. Common restorative procedures, including fillings and crowns. Other treatments include root canal therapy and bridgework.
•  Cosmetic treatments. We can help you to achieve the smile you have always wanted or correct flaws that have impacted your otherwise beautiful smile, with a variety of cosmetic treatments including teeth whitening, bonding, and porcelain veneers.
•  Diagnosing oral health concerns. When you are faced with oral health issues, we can diagnose the cause of your symptoms, which then allows us to determine the best treatment to restore the health of your mouth. Diagnosing oral health issues often involves a visual exam as well as X-rays or other types of imaging. If necessary, we can provide you with a referral to a specialist.

When Should I Visit the Dentist?

Regular dental visits are imperative for preventing serious oral health conditions from developing. The American Dental Association, or ADA, recommends that you have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined every six months for preventative maintenance.

While these visits are important, they are not the only time you should visit the dentist. You should also make an appointment any time you are experiencing symptoms of, or suspect, an oral health issue. The sooner you get attention for your concerns, the earlier we can catch a variety of oral health concerns. Moreover, diagnosing issues early allows us to provide you with less invasive treatments.

Depending upon your specific needs, and what treatments you need, we may recommend visits other than your routine 6-month cleanings and exams. We will help to determine an appointment schedule that will help you to maintain optimal oral health.
